We had a great, and much needed, weekend. Thanks to everyone who helped to make my birthday awesome. Emily and I took it easy all day Saturday. It was good because I actually feel pretty well-rested and ready to go. The next couple weeks are going to get crazy around here. As most of youContinue reading “Surviving a Study Program With EarPlugs, a Hiding Place, and Lots of Coffee.”
I had the opportunity to read a fascinating and very thought provoking book this past week called, “Transforming the Powers: Peace, Justice and the Domination System.” The basic idea of the book is taken from Walter Wink’s idea of the “powers and principalities” which consist of the “spiritual dynamics at work in the institutions andContinue reading “Training Violent Behaviors: Media and the Message of Desensitization”
Yesterday I started class. Now it’s official, I have been a doctoral student for 1 day, and at the moment I am still pretty excited about this new adventure (and also unsure, I must confess). I am taking a class with Dr. Nancey Murphy where we will be studying the Catholic philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre.
My housemate Chase and I were having lunch the other day and we started talking about important books that we would use if we were going to teach Bible and Theology students. Now granted we’re both from more of an Evangelical stream of Christianity so I recognize that some of these books may not appealContinue reading “Books For An Introduction To Studying Bible and Theology”
Much discussion has arisen due to the interest groups that Robin, Martin, Liz, AJ and others have been a part of. This along with the “Convergent Friends Gathering” taking place at our house on August 5th has created a lot of excited and an equal amount of criticism.

Every now and then it is a good idea to consider the influences you have in your life, maybe a lull in grace??? as Patrick has called it, is a perfect time. I first thought I would make a top three list of four different categories; books, music, movies, and blogs; but later decided toContinue reading “Reflecting On Your Influences”
When we welcome the authority of tradition, the Holy Spirit, the community of believers and the Bible then we level the playing field and invite the whole of creation to come and know Jesus.Viewing the Bible as an Authority, which guides and directs the believer’s life is a strength within the Evangelical community…. The Bible is a part of this work, but when Evangelicalism downplays other parts of God’s work in order to elevate the written word they have forgotten that it is the Spirit that birthed the Word, the community and the tradition.
Here are a few questions to ponder from a Friend of mine at EFC-ER, Wayne Evans: 1) Does Nietzche’s “God is Dead” (1880) fit into liberalism or have its own category? 2) What was the contribution of Quakers not making much use of discipleship (especially Bible doctrines) to the polarization? 3) If divorcing from theContinue reading “112440474109688762”
I went through and typed out all those book this year that have been most influential in my schooling. It was good for me to do this because I actually had the opportunity to realize that I did learn something this year! Philosophy: Brown, Warren; Murphy, Nancy; Malony, H. Newton eds Whatever Happended to theContinue reading “Reading List From My First Year at Fuller”
