Happy Birth-Month: Like a Baby In The Night

Well, we have officially entered December, month nine, and the countdown to the birth of the baby is at 24 days. We are both increasingly excited, and at this point are anxious for her arrival. We want to meet this amazing person living in Emily’s womb! But then again, we have no control over when she comes, we only have a guess, and while that guess (Dec 25) is our best guess (it is after all called the “due date”), it is no more than a guess. Approximately 2% of all babies are actually born on their due dates. So we have to keep watch and be ready, holding onto our guess, and yet at some level being completely clueless to when she plans to take the leap.

I keep thinking about the passages in the Gospel’s where Jesus talks about the importance of watching and being ready (Matt 24:36-44). Or maybe the passage in Thessalonians more fitting, since Paul makes a poignant illustration:

1Th. 5:1-5 Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, Β“There is peace and security,??? then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.

When I think of these passages, I think to myself, “like a baby in the night,” because that’s how I am seeing it right now. I’ve got my cell phone on at all times, we’ve got our bags packed, we’ve visited the hospital and planned our routes (and backup routes) for getting there. There has also been a lot of preparative work being done around the house for the baby’s arrival.

For instance, this past week I installed the car-seat:

Car Seat in Honda Fit

When I was putting it in, I read every line of the manual from the manufacturer, then I read everything I could from our car’s manual as well, just to make sure I had everything down. I spent more than an hour working on the project (yes, for me it was a project). Finally, when I actually put the seat in, I buckled that thing down with all my might. I kept thinking, “I don’t want this thing to budge, not even a centimeter!”

So we’ve got the seat ready, we picked up a co-sleeper the other night, we’ve ordered our diapers (Boo Bear Buns),we’ve got loads of clothes, we have a variety of slings and even a moby wrap, now we just need the baby. And so the waiting, watching, and being ready at a moment’s notice is how we will spend the next four weeks (or so). And for once these mystical passages about a “thief in the night” take on a new meaning, “like a baby in the night.”

  1. […] have officially entered December! For those in the know this means that a baby is coming soon! Happy Birth-Month: Like a Baby In The Night gives us a pretty good peek into the growing expectation in the Daniels home. What an Advent season […]

  2. Well the most important things: 1) Do you have well-charged camera batteries in your hospital bag? and 2) where is the nearest WIFI spot or other internet connectivity portal to send said pictures? FWIW, when I noticed we had entered December I thought, hey that baby’s coming soon. Good to pick a memorable date for a due date.

Also FWIW, the average first time mother is something like ten days “late” of their due date. You’d think the medical establishment might notice the discrepancy and recalculate their dates according to real data and stop basing OB/Gyn on the eighteenth century German pagan folklore that gave us the 280 day rule (ten moon cycles, cute huh?). Don’t get me started & sorry if I’ve ranted about this before, just know that if you’re starting a betting pool the smartest money would be on a 2008 baby.

Funny to think it took you an hour to fit the car seat. It probably took me that long my first time but now it’s a five minute job. Just wait and see how fast those diapers go on after you’ve done it 500 times!

  3. Hey Martin, Thanks for the comment. Emily said she doesn’t care what you say, and she’s having her baby before the end of the year! But hey, no fighting here – you and her can take that up on facebook or something! πŸ˜‰

    Haha…She is getting antsy alright.

For me, I don’t really care either way, it helps since I am not carrying the baby, but if she came a little early that would be fine with me.

I didn’t know that about the 280 day cycle, thanks for pointing that out. Also, already checked on WIFI, there isn’t any at our hospital! Not sure what I am going to do about that. I will have my battery charged and my charger with me just in case.

I can’t wait to become the diaper master – is there any kind of black belt or certification for people who change poopy diapers at lightening speed?

  4. Sending blessings your wife’s and your way πŸ™‚ My son was born on Dec 18th, and yes, he was 11 days late. The best you can do is watch good movies, try to savor the time you have one-on-one (it will be in short supply for a while,) and pamper your wife. The more relaxed she is, the easier the birth. I had a breech baby and a C-section with my first daughter and two subsequent natural births. The first (natural) one I fought, the second I worked with — second was WAY shorter than the first — and the pics came out better as a result πŸ™‚ Good luck!

  5. Jemila,
Hello – thanks for visiting my blog! Yes, Emily and I are trying to relax and have as much fun, and sleep as we can! We’ve got a few dates planned, and are trying to make the best of these last couple weeks. Wow, it sounds like you have some amazing birth stories, quite an assortment of experiences. Emily is going natural as well, and she’s really excited about it. We’re hoping we can stay relaxed and like you said work with it.

  6. Yes, I’ve had some interesting birth experiences πŸ™‚ I made my midwife tell me about her love life while I pushed out #2!

If your wife is going natural, I recommend Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth πŸ™‚

  7. I’m sure it’s no consolation that Emily has ALREADY been pregnant longer than I was with either baby. But really, that’s a good thing. I have no advice for the last month other than sleep as much as possible. And birth is always holy, no matter where, no matter how much technology.

    Blessings on you all.

  8. @Robin – A hearty amen to that! I look forward to worshipping God through the birthing experience, I can’t imagine how amazing (holy) it’s going to be.

  9. I noticed that I was getting clicks on my site from here so I popped over to see why. I hope the you guys like the diapers, and best of luck with the baby! Thanks for linking to my site πŸ™‚
    Warmly,
