Join Me on Buy Nothing Day – November 25th

Picture 3-1

As a follow-up from yesterday’s article I wanted to mention “Buy Nothing Day.” Adbusters does an event every year where they encourage people to not shop on one of the biggest shopping days of the year – November 25th (Saturday). Emily and I will be joining them and I’d like to extend that invitation to all of you.

It says on their site:

Every November 25, for 24 hours, we remember that no one was born to shop, we make a small choice to participate by not participating. We call it Buy Nothing Day, and judging by the huge successes seen all across the globe last year – with thousands of activists and fed-up citizens taking part in dozens of countries – this year’s festival of restraint could be the biggest yet.

Here’s what you can do – buy nothing. That’s it. Well and ask other people to buy nothing. You don’t have to do anything other than that, but you can make t-shirts, posters, send, emails, setup tables with flyers, and of course blog about it if you so choose. I will be inviting our church to participate as well. Their site has pictures sent in from people all over the world who have participated in the last couple years.

If you do decide to join in leave a comment or write a blog post telling us so.

  1. I think observing it on the 24th makes much more of a statement than on the 25th here in America. Coming from someone who worked retail for a number of years, making your employees come in at 4 in the morning to work 13 hour shifts with minimal breaks is ridiculous. And people hunting for deals to save a couple bucks here and there are what drives it, consumerism can definitely be a bad thing.

  2. I’ll do not, but only because it is already too much of a hassle to shop on the 25th anyway.

Thanks for the link. I might make a t-shirt.
