saturday evening raviolis

tonight emily and I made homeade ravioli from a jamie oliver recipe, it was fantastic.

here’s the recipe from his book “The Naked Chef Takes Off” (Jamie Oliver)

8oz potatoes peeled
1 1/2 asparagus, bases trimmed and stalks peeled
1 clove garlic – chop it
olive oil
salt and pepper
1 handful of fresh mint, leaves picked from the stems
1 fresh pasta recipe (we used his and it was great)
2 very large pats of butter
2 heaped tablespoons mascarpone cheese
1 handful of grated parmesan cheese

cook potatoes in salted boiling water, until tender, then drain. Remove the tips of the asparagus and set to one side. finely slice the stalks and fry with the garlic in a little olive oil until tender, placing a lid on the pan. Remove from the heat, add the potatoes and mash together. Season carefully and add half the chopped mint to taste. Fill your ravioli with a heaped teaspoon of filling and cook in salted boiling water with the asparagus tips for 3-4 min. drain and toss the ravioli and asparagus tips with the butter, mascarpone, parmesan and the rest of the mint.

We made the homemade noodles before hand, slavishly rolled them out (that was harder than I thought it would be) and then once we had the filling, and boiled them they were great.

We served them with a lovely tossed salad. It was a nice evening of cooking in the kitchen with Emily.

  1. Hey man, way to switch to WordPress. I’ve been wanting to do that for awhile; I just inquired at riseup.net if they’ll host me for a nominal fee, but if they turn me down I’ll probably try site ground. How is site ground in terms of under-the-hood access to WordPress for customizations, installing plugins, etc? My only hosting experience thus far is the wiki I have hosted with wikidev.net, and while I’m happy with the service I don’t have access for tweak very many things, and have to ask the host to do them for me.

One of the main reasons I want to switch is to allow a nested comment hierarchy, instead of the flat one Blogger (and I think Haloscan?) has. Are you planning to use that? Does it already come standard or is it a plugin?

    Be well
    Zach.

  2. Zach – I am pretty excited about WP, but I must say it does involve some techiness, which is both good and bad. Because it involves a decent amount of work to get things going just the way you want, it also takes sometime and is a learning curve coming off of blogger. But I am really happy to be using it and am enjoying the challenege.

I really like site ground, and thus far has been super easy to administer (and its pretty cheap). If you decide to go that route will you tell them I refered you? They’ll give me a month off or something like that…no problem if you don’t though. Also – another option is that I could give you a subdomain for free. quakeranarchist.gatheringinlight.com or something. It would give you full access to wordpress, and I wouldn’t charge you for it (I’ve been considering hosting about 5 other blogs on here, ones that I personally appreciate, and would love to extend that to you.

As far as the nested comments go – I haven’t installed a NC plugin yet, but I am pretty sure they are out there. It seems like WP will do just about anything you want, with a little coding and plugins. I’ve read some really good reviews on it (check out my delicious links), and seems like most those reviews see it as the best platform available at the current time. So far so good here.

Also – stay away from haloscan unless you are willing to pay for it, It won’t let you export your comments with the free version, so all the comments I’ve recieved in the last month since I installed it are lost to me on my new blog. WP has a built in import for both your blog and comments for blogger and a couple other services that is really nice, I should have left my comments alone and they would all be here on this page…oh well.

Let me know what you’re thinking.

  3. Thank you, very much, for the offer, but I just registered the domain quakerism.net, which I intend to use for the blog (aqa.quakerism.net).

Are you generally allowed to put up multiple blogs/sites on a Site Ground account (assuming you stay within the bandwith and size quotas)? I was planning on opening up quakerism.net for other blogs or projects, such as a Quaker Christian-universalist site I have some intentions of starting.

  4. Zach – I haven’t actually put up multiple blogs, but I know that its possible with my service. I like your idea and I think you should do it, please let me know if I can help at all and/or when you’ve got it up make sure you let me know so I can link to it.

  5. Wes,

Dude, what a small world. I was over at Ryan Bolger’s blog reading on Synagogue 3000, and saw your name and picture and I about crapped a brick. I vaguely remembered you told me last time we talked (at Friends Youth Camp) that you were going to Fuller.

Love to hear what you’re up to. I am no longer in the Friends church at North Olmsted and currently in PA at a UMC church. I know…long story man. Hope to hear from you soon.

    Grace,

    Mike
