Holding Tension in Community

There are many “tensions” or differences that we run into when building and existing within community. A faith community is no different. I think Camas Friends Church excels at doing this kind of work together. Here are some of the things I have learned from the way this meeting does community with each other.

  1. Thanks, Wess! I’m forwarding this to our M&C. I want to know more about what “strengthening the center” means for Camas Friends. One of the places I see this tension for us/me at Berkeley is in conversations about membership, and specifically how we present Jesus as authoritative for members of our church. How does Camas approach this?

    • Brian, thanks for the comment. I like hearing about what you’re doing at BFC around this question. I would say that for us it have very much been around working out what our identity is a community – are are those key threads, what does it mean to be “Christ-Centered” Friends, and how can we strengthen our practice and understanding of what it means to be Quakers in today’s world. One of the ways we do that latter practically is through learning and practicing discernment. I have found that to be immensely transformative.
