The first century church had an orthodoxy, if you will, in the Torah and such. They took what they had along with their Eklesia and let an organic orthodoxy emerge that we look to. Our 'foundation' comes from their gathering together. History proves that God does new things constantly and I believe we are a part of that movement. I'd have to say his scholarship is an extremely important part of the puzzle, or to use Rob Bell's analogy - a spring in the trampoline - but definitely not a "foundation" in the philosophical sense.
